To me, this song is initially asking for forgiveness from another person. If you read through the lyrics, you can probably figure that yourself too. People do bad things, some more wrong than others. And in the long run, you may come to a realization that you just want to recieve forgiveness for those very past decisions.
"In my place, in my place
Were lines that (1)I couldn't change I was lost, oh yeah
(2)I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed I was lost, oh yeah.."
(1)You cannot change the past although sometimes, of course, you wish you could. Unfortunately life doesn't have an undo button. A positive, however, is that you can learn from what you do. Learn to not make those same mistakes again in the future, and you'll become more wise.
(2) There comes a time when you completely cross the line too far. After, you later understand that you should have took it on with more caution. You may even become lost, and unsure where to turn next.
"(Yeah)
(3)How long must you wait for it?(Yeah)
(4)How long must you pay for it?(Yeah)
How long must you wait for it?
Oh for it.."
(3)How long will you have to wait for that forgiveness? It could be as short a time as a couple days, or as long as several years. And if it does exceed to that length of time, you can come to a conclusion that maybe that person is unwilling to forgive you.
(4)Through waiting all that time, your the one who has to pay for it. You know that what you did, is all you. It's no one elses responsibility but your own.
"I was scared, I was scared
(5)Tired and under prepared
But I'll wait for it
(6)If you go, if you go
And leave me down here on my own
Then I'll wait for you"
(5)You arn't always prepared for the upcoming events. And there may even be times when you think you are, but find yourself mistaken. This can grow tiresome to most.
(6) No one wants to be lonely, or that is, most people. Nor do they want to be left by someone who has a strong significance in their life. That's one of the hardest things to imagine in my point of view. Someone so special to you, gone. And to question yourself whether they will come back or not.
"(Yeah)
How long must you wait for it?
(Yeah)
How long must you pay for it?
(Yeah)
How long must you wait for it?
Oh for it"
"Singing ooh, ooh
(7)Please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
(8)Come on and sing it out now, now
Come on and sing it out to me, me
Come back and sing"
(7) Desperately pouring your heart out now. You can only say this so much.
(8)Never be afraid to give your all to someone if you feel that they deserve it. They may listen, or choose to shut you out. You can only hope they find enough kindness in their heart to give in.
"In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
(9)I was lost oh yeah
Oh yeah"
(9) You may find yourself still lost after it all. That person may or may not come back into your life. But you know in your heart, you did everything you could to fix it. You'll feel stronger knowing this alone. And that should be enough.
There have been multiple situations where someone can grow out of your life for some time, atleast for me. Most of the time they come back around. But for some, I know it's quite the opposite and I feel for those individuals. Because I know I wouldn't want to lose anyone over something that was so temporarily wrong. If this was you, then just know everything will come back around to being normal. You can live without someone whether you want to believe it or not. You are stronger than you make yourself to be.
